Obsidian is an igneous rock formed by the rapid cooling of viscous lava that is rich in silicate minerals. As silicate-rich magma extrudes the earth’s crust, it falls over the water bodies or other surfaces that are in contact with water and the lava gets cooled and consolidated instantly without any crystallization; resulting in a volcanic glass with a smooth uniform texture that breaks with a conchoidal fracture.
Obsidian is most often black in color, but there are varieties with brown, red, green, orange, yellow and sometimes the colors are swirled together.
It is used in the manufacturing of surgical blades, as type of semiprecious stones. Also, it is kept as decorative specimens etc.
