A call for responsible practices in mineral value chain

A call for responsible practices in mineral value chain

As we debate about mining in Africa we must address some serious underlying issues related to unethical mining practices and mineral trade. Numerous concerns given by humanitarians about child labor, slave labor and poor safety, health and environment concerns need to be re-looked. Laws and regulations in both mineral extraction and trade need to be enhanced at both national and international levels to ensure full economic potential and sustainability is achieved. Subjecting children and indeed anyone to harsh and dangerous mining conditions that are risky to life should be a thing of the past.
We must encourage responsible mining that meet international standards and control mineral trade to ensure both the national government and local communities leap maximally from the mineral wealth, whilst conserving the environment and ensuring sustainability.
Remember “If you do not educate children today, you are creating tomorrow’s conflict”.
